Mercedes Benz is the most recent manufacturer of cars to join the metaverse bandwagon. The German automobile manufacturer filed trademark applications for Mercedes Benz, Mercedes, S-Class, G-Class, and Maybach for the Metaverse, NFT, and cryptocurrency.
The application, submitted on December 14 to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), reveals Mercedes' intention to develop NFTs and NFT-backed media. For Web3 financial services, the company also plans to use tokens and digital currency. With regard to the Metaverse, Mercedes-Benz plans to develop a virtual store, downloadable virtual items, and virtual car parts, as well as a market for virtual apparel, accessories, furniture, and home appliances.
Collaboration With Five NFT Artists
Mercedes is already acquainted with Web3. The business collaborated with five NFT artists in January to replicate an online Mercedes Benz G-Class. On Nifty Gateway, the NFTs were released. Mercedes and blockchain startup Circulor collaborated even before the NFT project to track carbon emissions in the cobalt supply chain.
Mercedes-AMG Petronas, the company's Formula One racing team, announced an NFT collection on the now-defunct FTX NFT market in May.
The Bottom Line
Mercedes' approach is not entirely surprising, as numerous businesses filed trademark applications to protect their intellectual property in the Metaverse.
This year, a number of well-known automakers and brands have entered the Web3 space, including Fiat's virtual showroom, the industrial Metaverse from Renault, and Lamborghini with its three NFT collections. Porsche, a premium automaker, will debut an NFT line in January 2023.
